SANTA CLARA — Usually, the quarterback buys Christmas gifts for his offensive linemen. But Brock Purdy can’t even afford to live in the Bay Area without a roommate. So Christian McCaffrey has become the designated gift giver.
McCaffrey bought every member of the 49ers offense, not just the linemen, a fitted set of golf clubs and a bottle of tequila, because McCaffrey simply is that nice. Or he wants to make a statement that he’s the leader of the team and therefore the MVP of the NFL. Take your pick.
Here’s what McCaffrey said Friday in the locker room about the gifts he bought for his teammates.
Q: What was behind your gift for the players on the offense?
McCAFFREY: “Any time you’re getting gifts, it’s always tough. You’ve got to get creative, you’ve got to do something that panders to everybody. And I figured if they don’t play golf, they will at some point in their life, so better to be prepared than not. It’s nice to have a bag of clubs in your garage.”
Q: You’re doing a solid for Brock Purdy, because he’s not rich enough to do this yet.
McCAFFREY: “He’s doing as much as he can with what he’s got, but eventually he’ll be just fine.”
Q: How many of the guys said they don’t play golf?
McCAFFREY: “They will one day. Even if it’s when you’re done playing (football), you get bored, to get out of the house and go play 18 with the fellas, nothing better than that. Figured they needed clubs. To get them fitted for them too and to have a set that works, I don’t know if it’s going to do anything, but it might give everyone a bit of false confidence.”
Q: How is your golf game?
McCAFFREY: “I’m alright. I feel like I’m just like everybody else. More bad shots than good. I just enjoy going out there and having a good time. I have to go in very intentional if I want to have fun. I’ve broken a few clubs, thrown a few clubs in the woods. Etiquette has been good sometimes and bad sometimes. I’m learning to have more fun with it.”
