The San Francisco 49ers could be getting their best player back on the field. Running back Christian McCaffrey returned to practice on Monday and he could make his 2024 season debut on Sunday when the 49ers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 49ers officially opened the 21-day practice window for McCaffrey, who hasn’t played this season while he dealt with bilateral Achilles tendonitis.
The 49ers have targeted their Week 10 game against the Buccaneers as the potential date for McCaffrey’s season debut. They will see how he performs and his recovery following practices this week before determining his status for Sunday’s game.
McCaffrey, the league’s leading rusher and Offensive Player of the Year in 2023, has been dealing with the Achilles issue since training camp. The 49ers placed him on injured reserve in Week 2 of the regular season.
