Key Facts
Shortly after Breed conceded the race, Lurie said he was deeply grateful “to my incredible family, campaign team, and every San Franciscan who voted for accountability, service, and change.”
The Levi’s fortune heir, who also ran as a Democrat like Breed, had positioned himself as a political outsider who blamed the incumbent mayor’s administration for the city’s post-pandemic downturn, drug crisis, homelessness and crime.
San Francisco uses a ranked-choice voting system, and as of late Thursday, he had secured 56.2% of the vote in the final round of counting, compared to Breed’s 43.8%.
Lurie, who is the founder of the anti-poverty non-profit Tipping Point Community, has promised to expand the city’s homeless shelters, declare a “fentanyl state of emergency,” shut down “open-air drug markets” and hire more police officers.
