Garry Tan leads Y Combinator, Silicon Valley’s well-known accelerator program where tech winners like Airbnb, Instacart, and Reddit got their start. Since taking the helm as chief executive in early 2023, Tan has used his platform—and often, his visibility on social media—to revamp the accelerator, cheer on founders, and take a swing at local officials in order to reshape San Francisco politics. Tan helped fund an effort to recall San Francisco’s district attorney in 2022 and has also helped recall three school board members. He’s also a regular critic on X, where he has been known to sometimes take things to extremes. At YC, Tan hasn’t shied away from sweeping changes: laying off investors, cutting late-stage investing, doubling the number of annual accelerator classes, and moving its headquarters to San Francisco from Mountain View, Calif.
