It’s time to bust out your sweater collection and get in line for a pumpkin spice latte because the coziest season of the year is here. And if you want to double down on it all, then you should head to one specific West Coast town.
In September, All Clear Travel Insurance released its rankings for the coziest cities on the planet. It came to its conclusion after it created a seed list of cities regularly mentioned on social media and in publications as being “cozy” and popular for fall and winter city breaks. It then gave each city data points based on the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites, bookstores, cafes, cinemas, theaters, and museums per square mile. It also took into account the annual precipitation of each city, and the number of Instagram posts that used “‘#cozy[city].” Each data point was then weighted, and each city was given a score out of 100.
After tallying it all up, the team named San Francisco the coziest destination in the United States and the No. 12 coziest in the world.
Though really, for anyone who frequently visits the northern Californian city, it’s no surprise that San Francisco took the crown for the coziest spot in the nation. With its fog-kissed mornings, charming Victorian houses, and plentiful neighborhood cafes, it looks like something right out of a Hallmark movie. And speaking of fantastic book shops, while in town, travelers should take those coffees to go wander through the aisles of City Lights Bookstore, see the exhibits at the Palace of Fine Arts, and, if the sun happens to be shining, go explore Golden Gate Park’s trails and get lost in the moment. Or, check out any of the 43 fantastic things we compiled for you to see and do in San Francisco.
Other cozy spots in the U.S. to make the list include Boston at No. 13, Chicago at No. 17, and New York City at No. 20. As for the coziest destination of all, that honor went to Brussels, Belgium, but we think the domestic choices can easily rival this European getaway, too.
