The Seattle Seahawks emerge from the bye week on a two-game losing streak and have lost five of their past six games. They need a win in the worst way to remain relevant in the playoff race.
The Seahawks (4-5) have another streak they would like to end when they take on the San Francisco 49ers (5-4) on Sunday. The Seahawks have lost six consecutive games to the 49ers and quarterback Geno Smith is winless in five games as a starter against San Francisco, including a 36-24 Week 6 home loss to the 49ers.
Smith said beating the 49ers is a must if they want to become a playoff contender. In addition, Smith is eager to post his first win against the defending NFC champions.
“It’s very personal, man,” Smith told reporters on Thursday. “When you think about division opponents, there games matter the most. Especially with the 49ers. They’ve been at the top of our division, one of the best teams in the league for a while. If we want to be that type of team we say we are, we’ve got to go through teams like this.”

Smith completed 30 of 52 passes for 312 yards during the Week 6 game, but he also threw two interceptions, including a pick in Seattle territory that eventually led to the 49ers’ touchdown and a 29-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Seahawks had rallied from a 23-3 deficit after forcing the 49ers to punt on three consecutive possession, but the interception swung the momentum back to the 49ers.
Smith isn’t the only reason why the Seahawks carry a six-game losing streak in the series into Sunday’s game. The defense hasn’t been able to stop the 49ers in those games, allowing an average of 31 points per game during the streak and they have given up at least 27 points in five games.
Despite the losses to the 49ers and overall during the 2024 season, Smith remains confident in his teammates that they can turn things around and make a playoff push.
“I have no doubt in my mind the type of guys that we have, the type of preparation we’re going to put in and the way we’re going to step on the field,” Smith told reporters on Thursday. “I know I’m going to step on it with that chip on my shoulder, that edge that I always have. I know my guys are as well.”
