San Francisco’s fight against impaired driving saw a recent victory as District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the conviction of 36-year-old Karla Aguillon-Merino for driving under the influence on US 101N. Aguillon-Merino was found guilty on counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and having a blood alcohol content over the legal limit, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
The jury returned the verdict following a case that took shape after an incident on February 29, 2024. At around 2:42 AM, law enforcement arrived on the scene to discover a Black Dodge Challenger by the side of US 101 Northbound with all occupants, including the driver Aguillon-Merino, reportedly passed out. Inside the vehicle, authorities found a half-full bottle of Hennessy Cognac. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office emphasized the dangers of driving while intoxicated, saying, “Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous and will not be tolerated.” Assistant District Attorney Jenya Frid, along with paralegals and IT support staff, worked on the successful prosecution, crediting “the California Highway Patrol’s diligent investigation” for helping to remove an impaired driver from the roads prematurely.
Sentencing for Aguillon-Merino is slated for January 17, and she will remain out of custody until that date.
