American investors are in “advanced” talks with Rangers over a multi-million-pound takeover of the Ibrox club.
Paraag Marathe, president of the San Francisco 49ers’ investment arm, 49ers Enterprises, is among those leading the negotiations.
Mr Marathe is also the 49ers executive vice-president of football operations and chairs Leeds United in which the US outfit holds a controlling stake.
Former Rangers chairman Dave King is the major shareholder at Ibrox with a stake of around 13%, while another former chair, Douglas Park, and director George Taylor own over 10%.
Rangers plunged to a £17.2m annual loss despite record revenues in what the club described as a “challenging period”.
According to Bloomberg, the 49ers, owned by Jed York, are considering a part sale which would see the franchise valued as one of the most expensive sports outfits in the world.
It is understood they are looking into selling a 10% stake worth $9billion (£7.15billion), an indication of the financial resource that may be available to Rangers.
