The Miami Dolphins are officially making plans to move on from star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, which was confirmed by general manager Chris Grier on Tuesday.

It’s not often that a player of Ramsey’s caliber is available for trade on the market so it would make sense that several teams could be looking to add the seven-time Pro Bowl defender. One such landing spot could be an NFC team looking to rebound after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

What Ramsey would draw in a trade remains to be seen, but Miami could be looking for a late Day 2 pick. That could lead to a deal between the Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers, according to Cory Woodroof of For The Win.

“Ramsey could join returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and be a chess piece on the back end to slow down opposing offenses. San Francisco has clear need in the secondary at cornerback and safety,” Woodroof wrote. “We’re not sure how the 49ers will be next year, but adding a player of Ramsey’s caliber would certainly inspire more confidence in the ceiling of the defense. Again, the team’s secondary really could use him.”

Ramsey, a three-time All-Pro selection, has three years remaining on a $72 million contract, per Spotrac. He carries salary-cap hits of $25 million, $26.8 million and $36.2 million over the next three seasons, respectively. Those are some big cap hits for a cornerback already over the age-30 cliff.

With that said, Ramsey has allowed a 71.8 passer rating and 6.6 yards per target during his two seasons with Miami, both of which are career-best marks.

The Dolphins find themselves in an odd spot after spending the majority of the offseason as one of the quieter teams in the NFL. Shipping off Ramsey would open a massive hole in a secondary that already had question marks.

But with his contract bringing up some major concerns over the next three seasons, this is something to keep an eye on as the 2025 NFL Draft arrives next week.
