Hear Henderson sum up his 9K MLB debut in front of family and friends
Hear Logan Henderson sum up his 9K MLB debut in front of family and friends. The Brewers routed the Oakland Athletics 14-1 on Sunday, April 20, 2025 at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
SAN FRANCISCO – Another fray in the Bay.
What other way to describe not only the eighth inning Thursday afternoon, but the entire series of misfortunes in execution on the mound and in the field during close games all week at Oracle Park for the Milwaukee Brewers.
For the third time in four days, the Brewers saw the San Francisco Giants pull ahead late while being aided by miscues from the visitors, this time coming from behind in the eighth inning for a 6-5 win to take the series three games to one.
Milwaukee fell to 4-9 on the road this year with four of the last six of those losses coming in the seventh inning or later.
Disaster strikes in eighth
Thrust into a high-leverage role due to Tobias Myers making a short start, Tyler Alexander couldn’t hold the lead in a tumultuous eighth. Working with a 5-4 lead, he walked Tyler Fitzgerald to open the inning after getting ahead in the count, 1-2. That spelled nothing but trouble with lefty-masher and Brewers killer Wilmer Flores on deck to pinch-hit, and he punched a two-strike single through the right side.
Vinny Capra opted not to try and turn two on a Luis Matos grounder right to him, instead freezing the runner at third and taking the out at first. That loomed large when Mike Yastrzemski’s bouncer to second was slow enough that Fitzgerald beat the throw from Brice Turang, who opted to try and cut down the tying run rather than take the sure out, home.
BOX SCORE: Giants 6, Brewers 5
That led Pat Murphy to go to closer Trevor Megill with the heart of the order due up. Even more porous defense ensued.
The Giants took a 6-5 lead when Christian Yelich dropped a line drive from Willy Adames in medium-depth left field. The ball was likely to score pinch runner Christian Koss from third as a sacrifice fly had Yelich caught it, but he didn’t even give himself a chance by miffing the catch outright.
Matt Chapman gets the Giants within one in sixth
Abner Uribe’s outing began on a rather rocky note Thursday, walking Jung Hoo Lee on four pitches before surrendering a frozen rope of a two-run home run to Matt Chapman. The fifth homer of the year for the Giants third baseman cut Milwaukee’s lead to 5-4 in the fifth.
It was only the second time in his last nine appearances that Uribe had been scored upon. He entered the game with a 0.93 earned run average.
Brewers score two on a squeeze bunt
Want to see Brewers baseball in a nutshell? Read the following sentence.
In a tie game in the fourth inning, the Brewers scored two runs, including one from first base, on a squeeze bunt by the backup catcher.
With men on the corners and one out, Eric Haase dropped a bunt down the third-base line, allowing Joey Ortiz to score with ease. Matt Chapman’s throw got past first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., rolling deep into foul territory and allowing Vinny Capra to motor all the way home from first.
Brice Turang moved Haase to third with a single, his eighth hit in the last three games, and a Sal Frelick RBI ground out made it 5-2, Milwaukee.
Tobias Myers gives up game-tying homer
Usually you have to get all of one to hit it out on a windy day at Oracle Park. Mike Yastrzemski, however, found the one spot of the park where you don’t. A high fly off Yastrzemski’s bat landed just above the 24-foot fence in right field, 343 feet away from home for a solo homer leading off the third.
He buckled down after walking the next two batters, getting a strikeout, fly out and grounder to short to escape with the game still tied.
Brewers get early lead
It was a positive but frustrating start to the game Thursday. Four of the first five batters to come to the plate reached, with the lone exclusion being Christian Yelich hitting a sacrifice fly. But Sal Frelick was doubled off first base on the play after being deked at second base while trying to steal.
Then with runners on the corners and two outs, Joey Ortiz, who entered the day 1 for his last 22, tried bunting but pushed the ball right to the first baseman.
The Giants got the run right back when Jung Hoo Lee doubled in Mike Yastrzemski with one out in the bottom half, but Milwaukee responded with Garrett Mitchell scoring on a wild pitch with two outs in the second.
