The San Francisco 49ers landed one of the best defensive players in the 2025 NFL draft in Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Mykel Williams. The 49ers drafted Williams with the No. 11 pick in the draft after attempting to trade up for him.
The 49ers were fired up to land Williams, who has immense physical potential, but is already a well-established run defender.

“He’s the best edge setter in college football,” said San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch after drafting Williams. “He’s the best edge setter in this draft class. If that’s the premise of one of the things that’s a hallmark of what we want in an edge guy, he does it extremely well.”
Williams was a critical piece of some impressive Georgia defenses over the years. During his three year career at Georgia, Williams won a national championship and two SEC titles. He recorded at least 4.5 sacks during all three seasons at Georgia, but was hampered by an ankle injury in 2024.
Mykel Williams’ NFL draft call
“Yes sir!” said Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams when the San Francisco asked if he was ready to be a 49er. Williams watched the draft with his family, but did not have to wait long to hear his name called.

“We’re so fired up to get you, man,” said John Lynch. “We’ve been sitting here nervous about going up. I tried to go up. Didn’t work, but we got you here! So, we are so damn fired up, man. You’re going to be great for us, man, and the entire building got behind this.”
The 49ers’ draft room clapped and celebrated after picking Williams, who also spoke with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and owner Jed York.
