About the 49ers
• General manager: John Lynch (ninth season with team)
• Head coach: Kyle Shanahan (ninth season with team)
• Last year’s record: 6-11
The 49ers fell well short of expectations in 2024, battling injuries from the outset and limping to a 6-11 finish, their worst since 2018. The team parted ways with its defensive and special teams coordinators, replacing them with a pair of ex-New York Jets coaches, Robert Saleh and Brant Boyer. Saleh, who ran San Francisco’s defense from 2017 to 2020, was the team’s most prominent offseason addition. But he has his work cut out for him. Six would-be starters on last year’s defensive squad left in the offseason and defense promises to be the focus of the draft.
Scouting the decision-makers
The 49ers’ draft process is a collaboration with Shanahan having sway on offensive players — especially quarterbacks and receivers — and Lynch having more clout on defense. The team has drafted well overall, but oddly has been more successful on Day 3 (George Kittle, Dre Greenlaw, Deommodore Lenoir) than Day 1 (Solomon Thomas, Reuben Foster, Javon Kinlaw, Trey Lance).
49ers’ key free-agent signings
• WR Demarcus Robinson (free agent): Two-year, $9.5 million deal
• TE Luke Farrell (free agent): Three-year, $20.5 million deal
• QB Mac Jones (free agent): Two-year, $7 million deal ($5 million guaranteed, worth up to $11.5 million)
• CB Tre Brown (free agent): One-year, $1.7 million deal
• S Richie Grant (free agent): One-year, $1.5 million deal

49ers’ key position needs
Defensive tackle: The 49ers lost three-quarters of last year’s starting defensive line in free agency: tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins as well as end Leonard Floyd. As it stands now, Jordan Elliott and Kevin Givens are their top two tackles. Look for San Francisco to take advantage of a deep defensive tackle class by taking multiple players at that position.
Offensive tackle: The 49ers lost long-time swing tackle Jaylon Moore when he signed a two-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s unclear who will take over his spot. Right now, Spencer Burford and Austen Pleasants — both have NFL backgrounds at guard — are the leading candidates. With oft-injured Trent Williams turning 37 this summer, finding a future left tackle should be a priority.
Defensive end: Another year, another bookend for Nick Bosa. The 49ers have had a lot of short-lived experiments at the position, from Dee Ford to Samson Ebukam to Drake Jackson to Floyd. The team ought to look for a longer-term solution to the problem, perhaps in the first round where players such as Georgia’s Mykel Williams and Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart might be available.
