The San Francisco 49ers will see some financial benefit to two of their many roster departures this offseason. originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The post-June 1 cut window allows a team to release a player from the roster and be able to split his dead-cap amount over two seasons, rather than absorb it all onto one year’s books.

This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers will see some financial benefit from parting ways with two former Pro Bowlers this offseason who were given this designation.

San Francisco let go of defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins which now officially frees up $5.6 million in savings for this season.

While these two moves were already known about, they were given the post-June designation in order to be awarded the savings, and thus are just now finalized on June 2.

This slight reimbursement helps the Niners’ pockets after unloading on three major contract extensions this offseason in George Kittle, Brock Purdy and Fred Warner. Those contracts are already signed and sealed, so the post-June savings simply add a little more back into the bank for this offseason.

Over The Cap writes about the transactions: “The team reworked [Hargrave’s] deal in early December to allow them to June 1 him. He will have $6.7 million in cap charges this year and a whopping $16.16 million in dead money for 2026.

“Collins had a $4.762 million cap charge which will now drop to just $1.358 million on the year. The team defers $4.074 million of his dead money to 2026.”

The total may not seem like a lot, but could help in any emergency situation if the 49ers need of a cheap veteran free agent in the event of an injury at camp.

Hargrave, 32, is a two-time Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2023, the latter of which was his first season in the Bay Area after a long tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2024, however, he is coming off an injury riddled campaign that forced him to play less than 10 games for the first time in his career.

Conversely, Collins started all 17 games for the 49ers in his first year with the team in 2024. He finished the year with five sacks, 33 total tackles and five tackles for loss.
