The San Francisco 49ers will need all the help they can get to return to the postseason after a 6-11 record in 2024. That work begins now, with 49ers general manager John Lynch trying to assemble the best roster possible.
Part of that process involves figuring out the future of 11-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams. The three-time All-Pro will turn 37 before the 2025 season kicks off, and he’s been a popular pick to retire in each of the past few seasons.
He signed a three-year, $82 million contract extension in 2024, and is under contract through 2026. Yet, with a $21.6 million cap hit for 2025, some wondered if the 49ers’ starting left tackle would consider retirement again this offseason. However, this time San Francisco is getting an early answer on the future of Brock Purdy’s blindside protector.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, 49ers GM John Lynch revealed that not only is Williams set to return for his 15th season in the NFL, he’s “really motivated” to come back.
“Trent’s playing and he’s ready,” Lynch said. “I think he’s really motivated to come back. That’s rarefied air that Trent lives in and when you’re a player that has experience playing at those heights, you don’t want to play unless you’re playing at that level. And I think that’s where Trent’s at. I think we’re going to see a real motivated Trent Williams to come back and have a great year and that’s a good thing for us.”
With Williams coming back, the 49ers can focus on filling other needs. Yet, he is running out of time, so San Francisco will eventually have to have a backup plan in place.
