Insider offers disappointing San Francisco Giants trade deadline prediction

Despite being tied for first place in the toughest division in the league, a top MLB insider does not expect the San Francisco Giants to make more than one trade before the July 31st deadline.

In a new column, The Athletic MLB insider Jim Bowden pointed to an intriguing option the Giants could target to bolster their struggling offense for the second half. However, outside of that potential deal — or something similar — he does not expect the front office to make a hard push to improve the team to win the National League West.

“The Giants believe in stability and continuity. So, outside of adding another bat, don’t expect a lot of moves from them at this deadline,” Bowden wrote. “They need more offense — they rank 24th in OPS — and could use an upgrade at first base or in right field.

“Josh Naylor would be a good fit because he’s a rental. And wouldn’t block their top prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge. The Giants usually don’t like short-term solutions, but in this case, it would make sense.”

The one-time All-Star would certainly be a difference maker for the Giants’ batting order. And with the Diamondbacks slowly falling out of contention, especially following Corbin Burnes’ season-ending Tommy John surgery, Naylor should be available. However, a case can be made that Arizona may pass on a deal that benefits a rival. Even in the short term.

Nevertheless, the prediction will be a major disappointment for San Francisco Giants fans. This year’s team has been one of the 2025 MLB season’s biggest surprises. Despite a couple of World Series contenders in the division, the Giants head into their game on Saturday tied with the Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

Injuries to the LA pitching staff are playing a major role in why the race has been so close. But San Francisco is still playing well above expectations after three straight seasons hovering around .500. The club has been to the playoffs just twice in the last decade. Not being more aggressive to get back to the postseason when the opportunity is there will be a big letdown for fans.
