While they’re only in second place of the National League West, the San Francisco Giants are enjoying their best season since their NLDS appearance in 2021. Now, it’s time to capitalize on the Giants’ 41-30 record entering MLB games today.
According to multiple outlets, the Boston Red Sox have agreed to trade star third baseman Rafael Devers to the Giants.
One of the main pieces headed back to Boston is flamethrowing starting pitcher Jordan Hicks, who is now set to join his fourth team since 2023. Other pieces headed to Boston include Kyler Harrison, James Tibbs, and Jose Belli. Notably, Boston is not agreeing to pay any of Devers’ 10-year, $313 million contract, $27 million of which he’s earning this season.
Being willing to take on Devers’ salary surely played a big role in the Giants not having to give up as many top prospects, yet the Red Sox still got a nice haul for their former third baseman. Tibbs, a 22-year-old outfielder who’s still in advanced A-ball, ranked as the Giants’ fourth-best prospect per MLB.com, but he didn’t crack the league’s top-100 list. The other prospect, Belli, didn’t crack San Francisco’s top 30 prospects.
Devers, a three-time All-Star who’s still just 28 years old, has been the subject of trade rumors ever since the Red Sox signed two-time All-Star Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract this past offseason.
Devers became an imperfect fit in Boston out in the field, but the Red Sox couldn’t afford to take the slugger’s bat out of the lineup. Thus, he’s been the team’s designated hitter for 72 games this season and he has yet to play a single inning with his glove on.
However, that hasn’t slowed down Devers at the plate, where he leads the entire American League with 55 walks entering play today. Otherwise, he’s hitting a solid .271 with 14 home runs and 57 RBI with an awfully impressive OPS+ of 149.
