Local Report: Yakima Pepsi Beetles end losing streak with win in San Francisco | Legion Baseball

SAN FRANCISCO — The Yakima Pepsi Beetles ended their four game losing streak by rallying to beat the Humboldt Eagles 8-6 at the San Francisco Tournament on Friday.

Yakima scored five runs combined in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 6-3 deficit and improve to 1-1 in the tournament and 14-15 overall this season.

Nate Kibbe was the player of the game for the Beetles both on offense and pitching.

After Noah Soptich gave up six runs (three earned) in five innings, Kibbe pitched two shutout innings in relief, giving up just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts to earn the win.

On offense, Kibbe was the lone Beetles player with multiple hits. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Kibbe scored on a balk and Justin Busey added another run on a passed ball to make is 6-5.

In the sixth, Kibbe hit a one-out, two-run double with the bases loaded to give Yakima a 7-5 lead. Victor Garcia struck out swinging on the fifth pitch of his at bat, but the Humboldt catcher dropped the ball and had to throw out Garcia at first which allowed Quinton Allen-Greggs to score the Beetles’ final run of the game. 

Braden Albrecht went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI and Allen-Greggs was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Yakima will play Team EPB on Saturday.

Pippins drop series-opener against Sweets

WALLA WALLA — The Yakima Valley Pippins lost the opener of their three-game series against the Walla Walla Sweets 4-2 on Friday night, to extend their losing streak to eight games.

Ian Fisher pitched well for the Pippins, going five innings and allowing one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The lone run he allowed came on a home run by Dominic Cadiz in the third inning.

Langan Naylor drove in the first run for Yakima Valley in the fifth inning. Cole Hansen reached on an error to start the inning and advanced to second on Neil Jansen’s groundout to the pitcher. After a fly out by Jack Varney, Naylor hit a single to right field that scored Hansen.

The Pippins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Hansen that scored Ethan Buckley. However, Walla Walla scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Yakima Valley had chances to score in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not get the clutch hit needed with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh and with runners on second and third with one out in the eighth.

Dillon Anderson and Julian Angulo both finished with two hits and Naylor was 1-for-3 with a RBI and two stolen bases.

Yakima Valley and Walla Walla will face off again on Saturday night.

Minor brothers, Pratt compete in Wyoming

CODY, Wyo. — Brothers Riley and Brady Minor and Jake Pratt, all from Ellensburg, competed at the Cody Stampede Rodeo held July 1-4.

The Minor’s finished tied for 11th in the team roping event on Friday with a time of 4.9 seconds. The team of Clint Summer of Lake City, Florida, and Jade Corkill of Victoria, Texas, took first-place in the event with a time of 3.8 seconds.

In the tie-down roping, Pratt had a time of 8.7 seconds to finish ninth. Tuf Cooper of Decatur, Texas, had a time of 7.8 second to finish in first-place.
