Entering the offseason, the Chargers are in a good spot in terms of financials. The team’s $63 million in cap space could even grow before free agency, as there are a few notable cap casualties on the current roster.
Joey Bosa is the most prominent name, and the team would free up over $25 million in cap space by moving on from him. On Monday, Bosa’s mother posted her reaction via Instagram in regards to the possibility of her two sons teaming up in San Francisco.
There was a photoshop of the two Bosa brothers together in 49ers jerseys, and their mother Cheryl reposted it with a few emojis commented. Joey’s brother, Nick, has spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
This hypothetical would result in the Chargers moving on from Joey while the 49ers swoop in and snag him in free agency. Nick has become the superior player of the two, as he is a five-time Pro Bowler and won the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.
Regardless of the family connection, Joey and the 49ers seem like an unlikely fit given the other needs throughout San Francisco’s roster. There are much bigger needs on their team after a poor six-win campaign.
They now have to worry about paying the likes of their quarterback Brock Purdy. With that, paying a guy like Joey Bosa a decent amount of money doesn’t make too much sense.
Still, from Cheryl’s perspective, it would have to be a dream-like scenario for those two to play together. Most recently in the NFL, we almost saw T.J. and J.J. Watt team up together in Pittsburgh.
We’ll see what happens with Joey and the Chargers, but he’s played in just 28 games over the last three years. Even when he has been available, he’s been a shell of the Joey Bosa that we became accustomed to.
