Somaek in Boston, a Korean restaurant that opened in March, was named one of the New York Times 50 best restaurants in the United States.
New York Times’ annual search for the country’s best restaurants led staff from eating “dishes served out of a trailer in a rural Virginia field” to “tasting menus in one of San Francisco’s most refined rooms.”
Among the 50 finalists, 32 opened since the outlet’s 2023 list was published, including Someak. Times writer Julia Moskin said the restaurant “presents Korean home cooking in all its magnificence and abundance.”
“Alongside robust classics like chilled pork belly, seared beef and stir-fried squid with rice cakes, Soamaek serves a master class in banchan, like chive-garlic salad, radish kimchi and pickled perilla leaf,” Moskin wrote. “Mr. Bissonnette, a veteran of Boston’s fine-dining kitchens (and the tapas juggernaut that was Toro), has built his dream chef cave, with a vinyl listening bar next door and a sushi speakeasy downstairs.”
The restaurant pays tribute to the food that chef Jamie Bissonnette fell in love with while cooking with his mother-in-law, Soon Han, whom the Someak is named after.
In addition to the traditional Korean fare, the menu boasts a “convivial cocktail menu, featuring flavor-forward, low-ABV libations, and, of course, the eponymous Somaek, a popular Korean drink made with soju and maekju (beer),” the restaurant’s website states.
Someak is located at 11 Temple Place in Downtown Boston. The restaurant is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
While Someak was the only Massachusetts spot on the NYT’s list, other New England eateries that made the cut were The Shipwright’s Daughter in Mystic, Connecticut; The Alna Store in Maine and Gift Horse in Providence, Rhode Island.
