ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – It’s time for another special edition of 18 Sports Flashback.
On this segment, we go back to 1994 at Horseheads Middle School. Then, two of the best pro baseball players in the game held a special baseball clinic for kids. Horseheads native Kirt Manwaring, who won a National League Gold Glove in 1993, brought his good friend Matt Williams along from the San Francisco Giants.
The clinic took place right after the strike shortened season in 1994. Manwaring played 13 years in the big leagues for the Giants, Astros and Rockies at catcher. Kirt lead the NL in fielding percentage as a catcher (.998) in 1993 and was first in the league in caught stealing percentage in 1992 and 1993.
Williams played 17 years in the major leagues with stops in San Francisco for the Giants, Cleveland and Arizona. The five-time All-Star is also won a Gold Glove four times at third base and is a four-time Silver Slugger winner.
Both Manwaring and Williams are members of the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame. Go back to 30 years ago on this edition of 18 Sports Flashback.
