Christian McCaffrey continues to deal with his injured Achilles. The San Francisco 49ers’ star running back recently flew to Germany to receive treatment for what the team has called Achilles tendonitis.
A expert in the type of treatment McCaffrey may have received In Germany speculated that the running back’s injury may be more serious than previously thought and he may be out for a much longer period of time. Now, there’s a report that could confirm the speculation.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco, McCaffrey has tendonitis in both Achilles.
“He has the bilateral Achilles tendinitis, which means Achilles tendinitis in both legs,” Maiocco said Sunday during an appearance on the “49ers Talk” podcast.
McCaffrey is currently on injured reserve and cannot return until the Week 6 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Based on McCaffrey’s trip to Germany, it’s uncertain when McCaffrey – or if – will play this season. While head coach Kyle Shanahan has said they would like increase his activity soon, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter said the no one knows when McCaffrey will be playing again.
“Here’s the truth of the matter: I don’t think Christian McCaffrey knows when he’s coming back,” Schefter said Monday morning on the “Pat McAfee Show.” “I don’t think the 49ers know when he’s coming back. I don’t think anybody knows right now when he’s coming back.
“Now, they have talked and said that they’re going to begin to ramp up Christian McCaffrey, potentially even this week, starting to get him back to see how he’s feeling. And ideally, you’d like to hope and think that he’s going to be feeling better, that the time off will have helped. But who knows how his calf and Achilles are going to react? Nobody can say for certain.”
