IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics CEOSuresh Gunasekaran is leaving his post to become the next CEO and President at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
Gunasekaran will officially leave at the end of February and start his new role in March. He told reporters Tuesday in a press conference he had lived in the Bay Area previously working as an IT consultant in the late 90’s.
UI Vice President for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson said UIHC will name an interim CEO over the next few weeks to take over forGunasekaran when he leaves and will conduct a national search for a permanent replacement.
Gunasekaran joined UI Health Care in 2018 and helped lead the system through the ongoing challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.
“I am incredibly proud of what the team achieved during my years here at Iowa and that this strong hospital leadership team will continue to be successful,” Gunasekaran said.
“It’s been an honor to serve the state of Iowa and its patient care needs both now and plan for future health care and medical education needs. Moving my family back to San Francisco to lead an academic medical center with such a storied history is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I couldn’t let pass.”
