After a few bumps in the road, which included canceling the first three shows due to illness, Fontaines D.C. has finally made it to the States. They kicked off their anticipated “Romance” Tour to support their soulful new LP, Romance, at The Warfield in San Fransisco. Until an Instagram post yesterday (September 24), fans were speculating if last night’s show would be another canceled endeavor. “San Francisco. You better believe it’s on tonight,” read the caption on the post, and a sigh of relief was released amongst the fans. This is not only because the band seems to be back to full health but also because the gentle melodics of their new LP will be experienced live. Last night’s show at the 2,300-capacity venue marks Fontaines D.C.’s first show in the U.S. since the August 23 release of Romance, and the band delivered a career-spanning performance.
Fontaines D.C. dove into their new album by starting the show with Romance’s title track. They wasted no time sliding into other corners of their discography by pulling out “Jackie Down The Line” from their 2022 LP, Skinty Fia. They also performed “Big Shot” and “Roman Holiday” from the album. Of the 17-song setlist, eight of the tracks came from Romance, covering almost the entirety of the 11-song project. Songs like “Bug” and “Sundowner” made an appearance, while hits from the album like “Starburster” and “In The Modern World” were saved for the two-song encore. The band didn’t forget their day one fans and nodded to them by returning to their 2019 debut, Dogrel. The band performed “Big” and “Sha Sha Sha” from their debut while also spending some time running through songs from 2020’s A Hero’s Death.
With everyone’s health intact and the first show wrapped, Fontaines D.C.’s North American tour is officially underway. The band will stay in California for a stretch of shows, making stops in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Pomona. They will then make stops in Phoenix, Omaha, and Nebraska before heading to Canada for shows in Toronto and Montreal. They’ll wrap up the tour on the East Coast with shows in Boston, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia. You can check out the full setlist, tour dates, and footage from last night’s show below.
