‘Everybody looks miserable’: Breaking down Cardinals’ lack of answers in loss
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon, QB Kyler Murray had no explanations for blowout home loss to Commanders
Brock Purdy’s pass was tipped at the line and the Arizona Cardinals snatched the ball from the air to secure a much-needed victory in San Francisco.
Seconds earlier, Chad Ryland kicked a 35-yard field goal that put the Cardinals up 24-23.
Arizona trailed 23-10 at the half but scored 14 unanswered points in the second.
Kyler Murray was 19-for-30 passing for 195 yards and a touchdown and one interception. Murray had seven carries for 82 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown run on the Cardinals’ second play of the game.
James Conner, who was quiet in the first half, piled up 86 yards on 19 carries. Michael Wilson had five catches for 78 yards, while Trey McBride returned from injury with six catches for 53 yards.
Ryland, kicking for injured Matt Prater, was 3-for-4 on field goals.
Kyzir White had the game-securing interception. Mack Wilson had an interception and fumble recovery. Budda Baker has 12 tackles.
San Francisco QB Brock Purdy was 19-for-25 for 244 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice and sacked twice.
Jordan Mason led the 49ers with 89 yards on 14 carries. Brandon Aiyuk had 147 yards on eight catches — most of which came in the first half.

Chad Ryland kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining to give the Arizona Cardinals the lead.
Ryland was elevated from the practice squad for the game. He was 3-for-4 on field goals, with one being blocked and returned by the 49ers for a touchdown.
Arizona trailed 23-10 at the half but scored 14 points, while shutting out the 49ers in the second half.

Jesse Luketa punched the ball away and Mack Wilson recovered the fumble for the Cardinals.
The 49ers were at the Arizona 8 and looking to put the game out of reach. Jordan Mason got the carry for San Francisco and was fighting to get back to the line of scrimmage when the ball was knocked free.
Luketa was inactive for the previous four games.

Elijah Higgins tapped his toes at the back of the endzone for the Cardinals second touchdown of the game. It was a pass of 2 yards from Kyler Murray. A penalty against the 49ers on the play gave the Cardinals the ball on the 1 for the extra point attempt.
Murray handed off to James Conner, who powered in for two points.
Conner and Michael Wilson featured heavily on the drive. Wilson caught three passes for 24 yards.

It took a while, but the Cardinals finally got running back James Conner involved.
At the end of three quarters, Conner has 10 carries for 35 yards. In the first half, he had just 9 yards. He also has two catches for 14 yards.
While his numbers are below his average, it has given a dimension to the offense that was missing.

Mack Wilson intercepted Brock Purdy’s pass intended for George Kittle. The Cardinals turned the possession into a 42-yard field goal by Chad Ryland.
The pass was tipped at the line by Roy Lopez.
Arizona got the ball on the 49ers 25 but wasn’t able to move the ball.

Quarterback Kyler Murray is 8-for-15 for 131 yards with an interception. Murray is also the team’s leading rusher with three carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.
James Conner is the only other ball carrier for the Cardinals. He has six carries for 9 yards.
Murray has targeted five different receivers. Michael Wilson has two catches for 54 yards.
Arizona is 2-for-5 on third down and 0-for-1 in the red zone. The Cardinals have not been penalized.
Quarterback Brock Purdy is 12-for-23 for 165 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Aiyuk has six catches for 115 yards. Four different 49ers have caught passes.
Jordan Mason leads the 49ers with seven carries for 49 yards. San Francisco has a total of 88 rushing yards.
The 49ers have two penalties for 15 yards. They have not turned the ball over. They are 1-for-4 in the red zone and 4-for-8 on third down.
San Francisco punter Mitch Wishnowsky kicked his first career field goal. 49ers kicker Jake Moody was injured earlier in the game, leaving Wishnowsky as the team’s best option when the clock ticked down in the first half.
Wishnowsky’s attempt was from 26 yards. Holding was fullback Kyle Juszcyk because Wishnowsky is the usual holder on field goals.

At 6-foot-4 and over 250 pounds, Nick Bosa is a hard man to miss. But Kyler Murray did just that on a second-and-6 pass at the 49ers 24. Murray’s screen pass was intended for James Conner. It hit Bosa squarely in the hands.
Bosa returned it 30 yards to the Cardinals 40 with 3:10 left in the first half. It was Bosa’s second career interception
Murray is 8-for-15 for 131 yards. He has three carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.
The Cardinals lined up for a 45-yard field goal. Instead of getting 3 points, the kick by Chad Ryland was blocked by Jordan Elliott.
Deommodore Lenoir recovered the ball and returned it 61 yards for a 49ers touchdown.
The play, which should have allowed the Cardinals to tie the game, instead saw them fall behind by 10.
Ryland is kicking for the Cardinals with Matt Prater injured. Arizona hasn’t had a field goal blocked in more than 40 years.

The 49ers settled for a field goal for a second time after the Arizona Cardinals defense made a stand.
The 49ers had first-and-goal from the Arizona 8. Eventually, that was fourth-and-goal from the 2. Jake Moody kicked the field goal.
The drive looked promising for San Francisco with 68 yards gained on 11 plays.

Trey McBride couldn’t hold onto a pass into the end zone and the Cardinals settled for a field goal.
Still, the 30-yard kick by Chad Ryland tied the game at 10. Ryland was elevated from the practice squad with Matt Prater injured. Ryland played for the Patriots in 2023.

Brock Purdy from George Kittle for a 4-yard touchdown pass. It capped a 76-yard drive that took 7:11 off the clock.
Purdy is 7-for-12 for 119 yards and a touchdown. He’s been sacked once.
Brandon Aiyuk has four catches for 91 yards. The touchdown is Kittle’s only reception.

After a 53-yard pass from Brock Purdy to Brandon Aiyuk, it looked like the 49ers would answer Arizona’s touchdown with one of their own. That didn’t happen. Instead, the Cardinals defense held the 49ers to a 28-yard field goal.
After the field goal, Arizona went three-and-out. After a punt by Blake Gillikin, the 49ers began their next possession at their own 24.

On the Cardinals first offensive snap, Kyler Murray completed a 22-yard pass to Trey McBride. On the second, Murray called his own name and ran 50 yards for a touchdown.
The drive lasted just 47 seconds.
The run was the longest of Murray’s professional career.
