Another common theme from the 49ers early season struggles has been the special team’s department. Special teams has been at the center of multiple game-swinging plays in favor of the 49ers’ opponent through four weeks. Yet, in Week 5 against the Cardinals, the 49ers’ special teams unit delivered a much-needed spark.
With the Cardinals lining up for a field goal from the 27 yard line, defensive tackle Jordan Elliott got his hand on the ball, blocking Chad Ryland’s kick. Once the football hit the ground, defensive back Deommodore Lenior scooped up the ball and ran it back for a 61-yard touchdown return, giving the 49ers a 20-10 lead in the first half.
