It started with a punt. The 49ers’ 20-point lead had been quickly slashed to a 6-point lead in the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth quarter, 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky pinned the Seahawks deep with a punt that left them on their own 3. A couple plays into their drive, quarterback Geno Smith threw an interception to rookie cornerback Renardo Green when he undercut a shot in the deep middle of the field to wide receiver DK Metcalf. Special teams and defense did their part, and the 49ers’ offense finished the job. Quarterback Brock Purdy hit tight end George Kittle for a touchdown that extended the 49ers’ advantage from 6 to 12, and Seattle never got it back below 6. These are the plays the 49ers had been missing in losses to the Vikings, Rams and Cardinals. All three phases needed to close the door, and they did.
