GREEN BAY – The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad, a source told the Journal Sentinel.
The 49ers are adding Carlson as insurance after Matthew Wright injured his shoulder making a tackle against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday. The 49ers signed Wright after their starting kicker, Jake Moody, injured his ankle making a tackle the week prior against Arizona.
Wright hasn’t been ruled out of the 49ers’ game against Kansas City, so it’s not a given that Carlson will be elevated from the practice squad to kick Sunday.
The last time Carlson kicked at Levi’s Stadium, he missed a 41-yard field goal that would have given the Packers a 7-point lead with just over 6 minutes left in a divisional playoff game. The 49ers scored a touchdown and won the game, 24-21.

Carlson has had a half-dozen or so workouts since the Packers released him Aug. 27.
The Packers, who drafted Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 draft, claimed rookie Brayden Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans after they released Carlson. They also released veteran Greg Joseph, who had competed with Carlson for the kicking job.
Joseph is currently kicking for the New York Giants, who lost Graham Gano to a hamstring injury but are expecting him back before the season ends.
In his only season as the Packers’ kicker, Carlson made 27 of 33 field goals and 34 of 39 extra points. He was 4 of 8 from between 40 and 49 yards and 3 of 5 from beyond 50 yards.
In training camp, Carlson made 64 of 78 kicks (82%) compared to Joseph’s 61 of 77 (79.2%).
Narveson has missed five field goals (12 of 17) in six games. He has missed one field goal in five games, including a 44-yarder against Arizona on Sunday.
