The first entertainment zone in California made its debut in SF for a special Oktoberfest celebration in September. The block party that featured two SF bars and allowed patrons to take their alcoholic beverages “to go” within the zone was largely hailed a success with roughly 10,000 people in attendance. Now, the next event for the entertainment zone is on the books, and this time it’s for Halloween.
The city recently announced that a Halloween party, called Nightmare on Front Street, will take over the Entertainment zone to celebrate the spooky holiday. The party is scheduled for October 31, from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The festive party is free and open to the public, with organizers promising music, themed games, horror movies, and a classic costume contest. As with the Oktoberfest celebration, the three bars on the block are permitted to sell alcoholic beverages to go. The bars will have their own spooky themes complete with special Halloween cocktails.
The new entertainment zone aims to increase traffic to Downtown SF, which has been plagued by complaints of empty office spaces and low foot traffic making it hard for local businesses to survive. And so far, the success of the Oktoberfest event is promising with participating businesses reporting a 1,500% increase in sales during the event.
“San Francisco knows how to have fun, host major events, and draw visitors from across the Bay Area and around the world to enjoy,” said Mayor London Breed in a press release. “Oktoberfest on Front Street may have been the first in California and our City, but it certainly isn’t the last. We know what this surge of activity does for our small business community and local economy, and we are seeing lasting benefits…”
Mayor London Breed has also proposed legislation for four new entertainment zones in the city to further efforts to enliven Downtown.
