Mayor London N. Breed and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) have unveiled plans for Nightmare on Front Street, a Halloween extravaganza taking over the city’s premier entertainment zone on October 31 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. According to an announcement from the City and County of San Francisco, this free event is set to feature live music, Halloween-themed games, horror movie screenings, costume contests, and a bevy of alcoholic beverages provided by local businesses Schroeder’s, Harrington’s Bar & Grill, and Royal Exchange for those keen on a wander with a drink in hand. Building on last month’s Oktoberfest on Front, which brought in an estimated 10,000 attendees and a staggering 1,500% boost in sales for participating vendors, it seems the city is doubling down on street festivities.
According to the City and County of San Francisco, Mayor Breed praised San Francisco’s flair for hosting major events that not only spice up social calendars but also stimulate local commerce, “We know what this surge of activity does for our small business community and local economy, and we are seeing lasting benefits.” And let’s not forget the brains behind the bill, State Senator Scott Wiener, whose SB 76 kicked off this whole street shindig, pushing forward the concept of entertainment zones designed to jolt local business and community togetherness with dynamic public events.
It doesn’t stop there. San Francisco is set to expand this joyride with new entertainment zones in Mid-Market and at Thrive City, hot on the heels of unanimous support from the Board of Supervisors on the first reading, as reported by Sarah Dennis Phillips, OEWD’s Executive Director. With promises of adult carnival games, DJ sets, and each participating bar shaking up their version of horror film-inspired cocktails, Ben Bleiman, owner of Harrington’s Bar, has aptly summed it up, telling the City and County of San Francisco, “Nightmare on Front Street will give everyone a reason to come into the office that day!”
