San Francisco: Even as sexual exploitation and financial scams through social media are becoming increasingly widespread, Instagram, a major social media platform owned by Meta, is preparing measures to curb the menace involving the misuse of explicit images, including nude photos.
A large group is operating by creating accounts to lure victims, including underage girls. In response, Instagram has announced a series of new safety measures to protect its users, particularly teenagers, from sexual exploitation scams.

The platform will no longer allow screenshots or screen recordings of images or videos sent through direct messages. New updates will include options such as permitting content to be viewed only once or replayed a single time.
Instagram had recently launched a specialised ‘Teen Account’ security feature aimed at younger users. These new features are part of that initiative. The platform has also imposed restrictions on who can contact teens via these accounts.
Instagram is taking further steps to make it harder for suspicious accounts, especially newly created ones, to send follow requests to teenagers. When private messages are sent from accounts in other countries, Instagram will issue a security alert. The platform also intends to hide the follower lists of teen accounts from suspicious profiles.
A new feature to blur nudity will be introduced as well. Photos containing nudity sent in private chats will automatically be obscured, and this feature will be enabled by default for teenage users. The platform will also warn users about the risks of sharing private images before they send them.
Meanwhile, Meta has already begun collaborating with the governments in various countries to prevent other forms of exploitation.
In India, they have developed a programme in partnership with the Central Government. As part of efforts to stay safe from online fraud and promote secure digital transactions, a campaign titled ‘Scam Se Bacho’ (Avoid Scams) has been launched.
