Deebo Samuel Sr. has been hospitalized due to pneumonia-like illness
Deebo Samuel, a San Francisco 49ers receiver, was hospitalized due to pneumonia-like illness and struggled to breathe during Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He left the game early, and Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Samuel had fluid in his lungs. Shanahan confirmed that Samuel’s return timeline is unknown. Despite being a game-time decision, he chose to suit up and played only three offensive snaps before leaving the sideline. He was later seen walking to the locker room with a trainer.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Samuel woke up on Sunday not feeling well, though he tried to push himself to play with his team and was admitted to the hospital for treatment due to pneumonia and fluids in his lungs. This situation adds to the ongoing injury issues for the team, as Brandon Aiyuk, the receiver San Francisco recently extended after a long rift, is out for the rest of the season due to multiple torn right knee ligaments following a hit by the Chiefs. San Francisco 49ers are seeking to acquire dynamic offensive weapon Samuel, who can play both receiver and running back, soon.
Samuel, in his sixth season with the 49ers, has been an indispensable piece for Shanahan’s offense, as he can perform any task. The injury situation is concerning, as tight end George Kittle is also considered day-to-day with a sprained foot. Samuel has accumulated 335 receiving yards and 51 rushing yards in his first six games this season, with two touchdowns, and has previously scrimmaged over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns to help the 49ers reach the Super Bowl.
