The San Francisco 49ers fear wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk tore the ACL in his knee during their 28-18 loss to Kansas City on Sunday.
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will know more on Monday after further testing.
“That’s what it looks like, but we don’t know for sure,” Shanahan told reporters after the game. “Just doing the test and everything with our hands, and with the trainers and stuff, all that. That’s what we fear. That’s what it looks like, but we’ve been wrong before, so we’re praying that we are.”
If tests confirm the initial diagnosis, Aiyuk would likely be lost for the remainder of the season.
Aiyuk suffered the injury while being tackled by Kansas City cornerback Chamarri Conner and safety Justin Reid after catching a 15-yard pass from quarterback Brock Purdy late in the second quarter. As Reid was trying to bring Aiyuk down, Conner ran in and threw his body at Aiyuk’s leg, forcing his right knee to snap backward.
Aiyuk remained on the turf while receiving medical attention before going to the sideline. He was eventually carted off the field and into the locker room.
Aiyuk had two catches for 23 yards before his injury and he has 25 catches for 371 yards this season.
Aiyuk’s injury occurred after the 49ers had already lost starting wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who tried to play through an undisclosed illness but exited after just three snaps. The 49ers knew going into the game that Jauan Jennings with a hip injury. Running back Christian McCaffrey has not played this season as he deals with Achilles tendonitis in both tendons.
