The injury news continues to get worse for the San Francisco 49ers.
Less than 24 hours after they received news that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending knee injury, they learned that wide receiver Deebo Samuel is in the hospital with an illness.
An MRI on Aiyuk’s knee on Monday confirmed what the team had feared, torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee. He’ll have surgery which will end his season.
Aiyuk suffered the injury while being tackled by Kansas City cornerback Chamarri Conner and safety Justin Reid after catching a 15-yard pass from quarterback Brock Purdy late in the second quarter of the 49ers’ 28-18 loss on Sunday. As Reid was trying to bring Aiyuk down, Conner ran in and threw his body at Aiyuk’s leg, forcing his right knee to snap backward.
Samuel was admitted into a hospital for what coach Kyle Shanahan said was “pneumonia-like” symptoms. Shanahan said Samuel has some fluid buildup in his lungs and added there is no timeline for Samuel’s discharge from the hospital or return to the team.
“I think it started acting up in the middle of the night Saturday night or early Sunday morning and then it just kind of evolved as the day went,” Shanahan told reporters on Monday. “Once we found out he had the fluid in his lungs and stuff after the game, then I believe they sent him over there.”
The news explains why Samuel was limited to four snaps before exiting during the game against Kansas City. Samuel has caught 20 passes for 335 yards with a touchdown and rushed 19 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in six games this season.
Without their top-two wide receivers, the 49ers are hoping to get Jauan Jennings back for their Week 8 game against Dallas on Sunday. Jennings did not play against Kansas City because of a hip injury. Even if Jennings can play, rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, along with Ronnie Bell and Chris Conley, will likely see more snaps on the field on Sunday.
