The pedestrian advocacy group Walk San Francisco has held a vigil following the latest death on the city’s streets.
San Francisco police confirmed a man died after being struck by a vehicle shortly before 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Stanyan Street and Parnassus Avenue in the city’s Cole Valley/Parnassus Heights neighborhood.
His name was not immediately available from authorities, but Walk SF said in a statement that the man was 70 years old and had been hit by a large construction vehicle. Police said the driver stayed at the scene and investigators do not suspect impairment to be a factor in the collision.
“Our hearts are broken for the man who died this morning simply crossing the street,” Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk SF, said in a statement. “We are holding his loved ones in our thoughts and know the entire neighborhood shares in our grief and concern.”
The group held the vigil at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the site of the collision at Stanyan and Parnassus for the latest victim and the 19 other pedestrians killed on San Francisco streets in 2024. That number is already above the total of 18 pedestrian deaths in the city in all of 2023.
“Pedestrians face more threats than ever. This means much more must be done to protect us.”

“Pedestrians face more threats than ever. This means much more must be done to protect us,” Medeiros said. “San Francisco traffic is back to pre-pandemic levels, and with more heavy vehicles and large trucks, delivery vehicles, and ridehail cars than ever.”
Walk SF is also helping to organize an event next month to mark the 10th annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. That event is planned for 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 on the steps of City Hall and people can find out more information at walksf.org/wdr.
