While a few teams cast long shadows on the Wisconsin sports landscape, the next couple months bring a slew of other fascinating, high-level events to the state … and in many cases they’re relatively easy and inexpensive to attend.
Here are events and teams that might not be front of mind the way the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, Wisconsin football and major men’s basketball teams are:
FIVE UNDER-THE-RADAR WISCONSIN SPORTING EVENTS
Nov. 1-3, Pettit National Ice Center, 500 S. 84th St.
The top American skaters – including 1,000-meter world record holder Jordan Stolz of Kewaskum and other Olympians and world champions – compete for spots on the United States World Cup team. (The World Cup schedule includes a stop at the Pettit Center from Jan. 31- Feb. 2.)
Admission and parking are free.

Nov. 23, Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Championship Course, 9002 County Highway PD, adjacent to University Ridge Golf Course in Verona.
The women’s race starts at 9:20 a.m. and men’s at 10:10 a.m.
Park at Verona schools, shuttle to the course. Purchase parking ($5) and tickets ($20) in advance.
Dec. 15, Fiserv Forum, 1111 N. Vel R. Phillips Ave.
UW-Milwaukee hosts a Sunday tripleheader with UWM vs. Akron at noon, Northwestern vs. Georgia Tech at 2:30 p.m. and San Francisco vs. Loyola Chicago at 5 p.m.
Tickets start at $35.
Dec. 26-28, Buuck Fieldhouse at Concordia University, 12800 N. Lake Shore Dr., Mequon
Nine games each day include four defending state champion boys basketball teams and top players from around the state.
Ticket information will become available in November.
Jan. 1, Al McGuire Center, 770 N. 12th St.
Women’s basketball has the sports world’s attention as much as ever, and UConn is a top-five team with the past two Wisconsin Ms. Basketball recipients on its roster, KK Arnold of Germantown and Allie Ziebell of Neenah. This also will be Cara Consuegra’s first Big East Conference home game as MU’s new coach.
General admission tickets are $25.
