In the last few offseasons, the San Francisco Giants have found it relatively difficult to sign the top free agents. Despite that, they aren’t bowing out from a potential contendership for Corbin Burnes’ services.
The 2021 Cy Young winner is the best free-agent starting pitcher left in the market. As per projections by MLB Trade Rumors, he is expected to earn in excess of $200 million. As he is 30, he is expected to receive offers for over five years.
As per insider Mark Feinsand, the Giants have “significant interest” in signing the former Orioles ace. They have competition from the O’s themselves, alongside the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and the Red Sox. The Giants might have some advantage over the AL East teams as Burnes has connections to the western coast, having lived his early days in California.

If the Giants acquire Burnes, he will be a like-for-like replacement for Blake Snell at the top of the rotation. He will form a strong duo with Logan Webb for the one-two punch, and the Giants could aim to compete with the rivals Dodgers, who landed Snell and have players like Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow.
Giants have to deal with payroll cap to sign Corbin Burnes
There have been indications from San Francisco management that they would be looking to reduce their annual payroll this year. They paid $244 million to its 40-man roster last season, which was $7 million above the threshold. Due to this reason, the club will have to make concessions.
They are billed at $154.8 million for the upcoming, leaving them some room to sign free agents, including Burnes. The Giants are certainly aware that the four-time All-Star will not sign for anything less than $28 million annual average value.
So if San Francisco locks in Burnes, it might be their only major free agency signing this winter. The NL West team already dished out a six-year, $151 million extension for Matt Chapman. They have been interested in infielders Willy Adames and Ha-Seong Kim, but those would be hard to pull off with a major starter contract.
The Giants hope that no matter who they get by Opening Day next year, they will improve from their losing season (80-82).
