Deebo Samuel deleted the critical tweet, but he doesn’t seem to have any regrets.
The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver poured a little salt on the wound that is the team’s lost season after tweeting that his low production is a result of not getting enough opportunities.
On Monday, Samuel wrote on X, “Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!” Samuel deleted the tweet and posted another tweet saying, “not hating on any of my teammates.”
Samuel was asked by reporters on Tuesday if he had anything to add following the deleted tweet.
“You read what you read,” Samuel said. ‘A little frustrated for sure.”
It’s definitely been a difficult season for Samuel, who has totaled just 85 receiving yards over the last four games. Samuel has only 40 catches for 553 yards and one touchdown through 12 games this season. His 3.3 catches per game and 46.1 receiving yards per game averages are career-lows. He leads the 49ers in drops with five.
Samuel’s effectiveness running the football has decreased as well. Samuel has carried the ball 32 times for 92 yards and one touchdown in 2024, compared to 37 carries for 225 yards and five touchdowns in 2023.
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said he would prefer Samuel keep his frustrations inside the building and not go public. He shrugged off the entire incident, saying it’s “water under the bridge.”
“We’d always love things to stay in-house,” Shanahan told reporters Tuesday. “That’s probably why I don’t mess with social media. I’m sure I’d get worked up and stuff too if I was reading stuff about myself all the time. And then I’d maybe make a tweet or something too.
“I mean is it a distraction in our building? No. I’ve got to answer questions about, it’s the first time I’ve talked about it is right here. But Deebo and I see each other every day and talk about stuff every day. So my advice is to not let the outside frustrate you, because just answering those things isn’t going to help you in any way. Usually only hurts you. But as far as like what we deal with and our relationships and our team, it’s water under the bridge.”
