San Francisco’s next free outdoor concert will feature a Grammy-winning rock band against the backdrop of City Hall, marking the second of three concerts co-produced by Another Planet Entertainment in an effort to revitalize downtown.
After pulling together an all-ages dance party at Embarcadero Plaza last month and bringing System of a Down and Deftones together for a raucous night of nostalgia at Golden Gate Park a few weeks ago, the organizers behind the annual Outside Lands festival, in collaboration with the city of San Francisco, have booked Portugal. The Man, known for hits like “Feel It Still,” “Live in the Moment” and “So Young.”
The show falls on Sept. 20 — the same night as East Bay punk band Green Day’s homecoming concert at Oracle Park — and is set at Civic Center Plaza, where electronic dance music DJs Fred Again and Skrillex drew an estimated 25,000 fans at the start of the summer. Funk and soul band Snacktime is billed as the night’s opener.
While the event is free and open to all ages, fans are encouraged to RSVP online.
The free concert is part of Another Planet’s partnership with the mayor’s office and the Recreation and Parks Department to host more live music events in an effort to spur a cultural and economic post-pandemic revival in the city. The agreement went into effect at the start of the year and commits the Berkeley-based live concert promoters to three years of free and ticketed shows in addition to increased community benefit funding.
The upcoming Civic Center Plaza show will be followed by a final concert in Union Square in October, with the acts still yet to be announced.
