San Francisco’s Cole Valley is set to become the city’s latest entertainment zone if legislation introduced by Mayor London N. Breed and Supervisor Rafael Mandelman goes through. According to the City and County of San Francisco, this move, part of Mayor Breed’s broader economic recovery initiative, could see the neighborhood buzzing with events where local businesses, such as bars and restaurants, can sell alcoholic beverages for outdoor events.
The potential entertainment zone in Cole Valley would follow in the footsteps of the two that have already found success in San Francisco — the inaugural Front Street zone and Thrive City, which served as the second zone. Mandelman, who represents District 8, has highlighted the neighborhood’s willingness to embrace such developments, noting, in particular, Cole Valley’s first-ever night market last Thursday as “a smashing success” that showed evidence of the community-building effects these zones can bring, despite the fact they could enable restaurants and bars to proliferate the area with more venues for outdoor alcohol consumption, which has been a cause for concern amongst some residents.
Mayor Breed emphasized that entertainment zones are key for attracting and sustaining residents and visitors, referencing successful past events that led to dramatic sales increases for participating businesses. Under SB 76, authored by Senator Scott Wiener, San Francisco has had the power to designate such areas that allow for the sale of alcoholic beverages during special events. Dan Serot, the President of the Cole Valley Merchants Association and owner of Finnegans Wake, told the Mayor’s Office how the community looks forward to utilizing the entertainment zone for future Cole Valley Nights markets and other events.
