Detroit Lions fans can breath a sigh of relief after Penei Sewell missed just one play on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.
The Lions’ most valuable offensive player outside of Jared Goff exited the game for the final play of the first half and went to the locker room early, but fortunately for the Lions was able to return for the start of the second half.
With two seconds left in the first half, right tackle Penei Sewell went to the locker room while the Lions took a knee after a 49ers missed field goal.
At this time it’s not clear whether Sewell picked up a minor injury and was able to play through it or just needed to use the facilities (or something of that nature.)
The Lions have just under 20 players on injured reserve, including starters like defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, defensive tackle Alim McNeill and cornerback Carlton Davis III. Detroit is starting to get some players back like Ifeatu Melifonwu and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, plus linebacker Alex Anzalone is nearing a return.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said at the beginning of the week Detroit would play their starters as usual no matter what happened in the Minnesota game. The Lions have not rested starters in the past and prepared during the week as normal in case a win would make them the 1-seed.

It could be something. It could be nothing. But in the last play of the half, a knee by Lions quarterback Jared Goff, Penei Sewell was not on the field.
The Lions got the ball back with two seconds left in the half and were simply kneeling the ball out, but Sewell, who has never missed a game in his career, was not on the field.
It’s not clear when or even if he was hurt, but the dominant offensive lineman did go to the locker room early.
