After a week off, Stan State baseball returns to the diamond this weekend to host San Francisco State in a four-game series at Warrior Field. The series opener is set for 6 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Turlock Little League Day. The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
LAST TIME: Stan State in its last series only played two games in a weather-shortened series at Cal State San Marcos on March 16. The Warriors lost 6-3 and 6-1 to the Cougars in a doubleheader that Sunday. Three players hit over .300 in Flavio Perez (.333), Ryan Leonesio (.333), and Danny Murphy (.286). Perez had three hits of which one was a double. Cameron Rosen had a team low 3.38 in his 5.1 innings pitched.
WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State enters this weekend with a 10-14 overall record including a 5-9 CCAA record. The Warriors are hitting .274 as a team with a .406 slugging percentage and a .371 on-base percentage. Their team earned run average is 4.76 and they have a .982 fielding percentage. Stan State is 28-for-32 in stolen base attempts. The Warrior’s pitching staff has struck out 150 batters and walked 87 in 210 innings of work.
HITTERS: Eight Warriors are hitting over .275 in Jacob Reyes (.444), Ryan Leonesio (.356), Luke Davies (.324), Jacob Baker (.311), Flavio Perez (.306), Arthur Navarette Jr. (.301), Tyler Van Dyk (.280), and Alex Solis (.277). Davies has a team leading .647 slugging percentage while Leonesio has a team high .466 on-base percentage. Baker leads the team with his 15 runs batted in and eight stolen bases. Perez has a team high 30 hits and is tied with Baker, Davies, Solis, and JD Madrigal each with three home runs. Solis is tied with Perez each with nine doubles. Robert Valdivia has a team leading three triples.
PITCHERS: With at least 24 innings pitched, Rocco Gurrola has a team low 3.30 earned run average followed by Cameron Rosen with a 3.42 earned run average. Zach Geiss is 3-0 with three pitchers recording two victories in Austin Balentine (2-2), Caleb Bertoncini (2-1), and Gurrola (2-3). Noah Chelberg is 1-1 in his team leading ten appearances. Rosen has Stan State’s lone save while Gurrola has struck out a team high 28 batters. Gurrola has 28 strikeouts and walked seven while Rosen has 25 strikeouts and six walks. Geiss has 13 strikeouts with one walk while Balentine has 18 strikeouts and nine walks.
WALK-OFFS: Stan State has three walk-off victories in its first 24 games. The first came in the Warriors 3-2 victory in ten innings of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 16. Alex Solis had a lead-off double and was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks who then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Flavio Perez. Brooks scored on an Arthur Navarette Jr. infield single to second base. Their second walk-off win was in the night cap of Saturday’s February 22 doubleheader with No. 20 CSUSB. With one out, Perez and Luke Davies had back-to-back singles. Danny Murphy pinch ran for Perez and scored on a Jonluke Goldman single up the middle. Their latest one came in the Warriors’ 5-4 eleven-inning victory over Cal State Los Angeles. Navarette hit a walk-off single that brought in Jacob Reyes with the game-winning run in the eleventh inning.
TIED FOR FIRST IN THE NATION: As a team, the Warriors and Seton Hill (Penn.) are tied for first in the nation with their .985 fielding percentage. They are 14th with their 21 sacrifice hits. Rocco Gurrola is 32nd with his 1.44 walks per nine inning average.
CCAA: As a team, Stan State is first in the CCAA with a .985 fielding percentage. The Warriors are second with 21 sacrifice hits, third in least walks (87), and tied for fourth with six triples. They are sixth in slugging percentage (.404), on-base percentage (.369), and stolen bases (28). Ryan Leonesio is tied for second with his four sacrifice hits and tenth with his .466 on-base percentage. Robert Valdivia is second with his three triples and Rocco Gurrola is third with his 43.2 innings pitched. Gurrola is eighth with his 3.30 earned run average and Rosen is tenth with his 3.42 ERA. Jacob Baker is tied for fifth with his eight stolen bases while Alex Solis and Flavio Perez each are tied for seventh with their nine doubles. Zach Geiss is tied for tenth with his three victories.
ALL-TIME LEADER: Alex Solis is the Warriors’ all-time leader with his 48 doubles in his career. He is third with his 176 hits. Solis is just one run scored from moving into top ten and three runs batted in from moving into tenth.
HITTING STREAK: Flavio Perez has a 15-game hitting streak and a 19-game reached base safely streak heading into this week’s four game series against SF State. Tyler Van Dyk and Jacob Baker each have an eight-game reached base safely streak.
LITTLE LEAGUE DAY THIS SATURDAY: Any youngster wearing their Little League baseball or softball jersey will be admitted into Saturday’s doubleheader for free. First pitch for game one is 1 p.m. followed by game two at approximately 4 p.m.
