Stop me if this sounds familiar but San Francisco point guard Marcus Williams is being withheld from competition. It stems from a mysterious issue with eligibility. This continues to be a recurring issue throughout his unusual college basketball career and it will leave the Dons without one of their best players for the foreseeable future as the postseason gets underway this weekend.
There is no telling how long he could be out.
Williams, a fifth-year senior, averaged 15.1 points on 48.3% shooting and 41.4% from three, 3.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game during the 2024-25 college basketball regular season. He finished as the University of San Francisco’s second-leading scorer in a primary ball-handler role.
However, Williams will not be on the court when the third-seeded Dons play their first game of the West Coast Conference Tournament on Sunday night. The program announced on late Friday night that he is instead being sidelined due to a “potential NCAA rule violation.” It did not elaborate further. It will not elaborate further.
The University continues to work on obtaining additional information related to this issue, but at this time will withhold him from competition. The University of San Francisco is committed to upholding all NCAA rules and ensuring that each student-athlete representing the institution in competition meets all eligibility requirements. This is the only statement the University will make concerning this matter.

This is major news out of the WCC because Marcus Williams is one of the better players in the league. San Francisco often goes as he does.
Although the program is unwilling to peel back the curtain, it is something that continues to be an issue. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard allegedly played his entire freshman season on double secret probation at Wyoming because of behavioral issues and later took an extended “leave of absence” during his sophomore year at Texas A&M. His head coach said at the time that it “was not a disciplinary action at all” but it sure feels like we never got that full story.
Nevertheless, Williams left College Station for Northern California as a rising junior. He played each of the last three seasons for the Dons. They will be without him on Sunday against either LMU or Washington State. A timeline for his return is unclear. It is also unclear as to whether the withholding stems from academics, behavior, or something more serious like gambling. Information is limited.
Marcus Williams is not going to dress. That’s all we know for now!
